Obsessive Questioning
Fortunately, being curious about networking protocols is more easily resolved than being curious about colonial ancestors. I left home somewhat agitated (still trying to figure out what different things on the DHCP list were, but "I'm late!"), and found myself thinking about my "open questions" in the car. One was how my Apple Express wireless router worked with my Linksys router as far as DHCP and my theorized possibility that something could give itself a fixed address in the address space of the home network and just work. I figured UDP had to be part of the answer and guessed how it worked -- and i think i guessed right.
The other question had to do with how on earth Skype manages to work behind the Linksys firewall router: I'm happy to find it's not obvious and that it is, technically, a trick. http://www.h-online.com/security/features/How-Skype-Co-get-round-firewalls-747197.html
