Tension in Paradise

I seem to be suffering from a decline in motivation: i hope it's tied to just my own tides and cycles.

No car news yesterday. The "to do" list on the website says there's nothing for us to do, even though the appraisal says completed. I wonder if there's discussion about the compensation for the loss of the HOV sticker. I pondered taking Caltrain today, and Caltrain may undergo massive service cuts today. It's not likely to result in a "Ballad of the MTA" effect, but it is a bit annoying.

Yesterday evening we watched Caught in the Act, a recording of the Styx concert in 1983 after release of Kilroy Was Here. There was a certain amount of muttering of, "Oh my, the '80s." The shoulder pads. I am not a "fan," following the ins and outs of bands (or shows or authors or ...), so i really knew very little about the dynamics of the group. As we watched the three very different yet very strong personalities of DeYoung, Young, and Shaw, i read up on the band's history on Wikipedia. (Part of my research was because the Shaw's speaking accent was quite surprisingly southern.) The creative and personal tension of the group right before the break up probably led to the depth of style in the performances: energy from the guys who wanted to rock out, drama from DeYoung. On the other hand, i don't think i imagined the slight difference in performance energy, with DeYoung getting into acting, say like the protagonist in The Year Kenny Loggins Ruined Christmas and Young and Shaw having more the respect for theatrical vision of the grandmother and aunt.

Then there were the clothes. We watched some videos from the previous tour to support Paradise Theater and the diversity of clothing styles on the three front men was fascinating. The white jumpsuit James Young wore kept attracting my attention like a UFO against the night sky.

I am now very tempted to read the biography of the bassist, Chuck Panozzo, The Grand Illusion: Love, Lies, and My Life With Styx. Yet, life is short, and there are so many other things on my reading list.

My white Chatsford 60 oz teapot has been relegated to the deck, where i will use it for some sort of planter. I've replaced it with a matte black-green stoneware tea kettle. I'm not sure if i'm using it in its kettle mode from now on, or just occasionally. I worry that having the pot boiling hot by the bed in the morning would be asking for an injury, yet i take the heat capacity of the pot more seriously, warming it up. (It's quite possible that the damage to the Chatsford pot came from temperature shock over the years.)

I've also purchased a dear 12 oz Chatsford pot in a sunny yellow, heavily discounted as a second. The massive matte black pot and the glossy little yellow pot make for fun company in the morning, as i make Christine a fruit tisane. She's given up caffeine to reduce her pain sensitivity.

It's nice to have the smaller pot for an evening brew for me, as well.
