I've found it's hard to know sometimes just how one is led. Listening and witnessing is just about always the first step for me though--understanding and being informed is important. And actions can be small or large: I live and work in diverse cities but my immediate area is not so diverse. I try to be extra pleasant and respectful to those who often don't get respect for racial/ethnic/other social reasons.
