Barely made it one night. Came out this morning, and two trashcans had been knocked over, one of which had had the lid come loose. Maybe didn’t bungee it tight enough, didn’t have time to investigate.
Raccoons are very smart, adaptable, and have opposable thumbs.
I recall once, years back, when I lived in another house in the same municipality, sitting in my den/study/work room, which was on the 2nd floor, overlooking the back alley that ran through the middle of our block. This was the service alley, which, among other things, was where the trash was put out. I heard a crash. Looked out, and saw the raccoons had knocked over the neighbor’s trashcan. There were 4 of them: 2 were feeding, while the other 2 stood guard, facing in opposite directions. Then they traded off. They actually had set up a defensive perimeter. I remember thinking they handled it better than half my troops.
