I forgot it was a workday at Meeting yesterday. Ah well, we had a good gentle morning together and then i worked all afternoon.
I ended up distracted in the early morning, running across my cache of digital "clippings" from the 90's and early 00's. I spent some time doing what i call digital archaeology, going through many of files added in January in the 90's, in 2000, and in 2002. Those that tie to current interests i added to my current reference collection, and i purged the rest. It's not that the mostly text files take up space, but that i'd never find them if i was looking for clippings on those general topics. There was a temptation to add the files whole cloth, but i'd still need to tag them, so being selective seemed sensible.
One of the articles was "Why do people benefit from unfounded optimism?" from January 24, 2000. I'd titled the file with "pessimism" which i found terribly curious twelve years later.
It does seem that a decade later, we do hear far more about studies that address happiness, connection, and joy.
After 9, i rallied Christine, and we went out on errands, first to the Farmer's Market. I tried not to buy all the food, and chose tea instead of a decadent drink at the coffee shop. When we passed the prepared food stalls, though, i was drawn to an Afghani food tent where thin flat breads stuffed with a variety of things were on display. Wheat was used, but my interest had the proprietor preparing a nibble of flat bread and spreads that was just wonderful. So i bought a package of the spinach flatbread, an eggplant chutney, and a jalapeƱo jelly off plan. Christine found sweets in the tent next to the Afghans' and brought home an eclair and pecan tart.
As we dropped of mail in downtown Mountain View, Christine remembered we had been carrying books in the trunk all December, waiting for when the used-book store would again consider acquisitions. We trundled in the two large boxes, and while waiting i found a knitting with beads book that had a simple sweater design that looked like i could cross the economy of knitting with some nice places to show off fun crochet stitches. Christine, too, found some books, and i grabbed a book on sustainable business practices and a DVD as we were checking out (and using our store credit for our purchases).
During the rest of the day i worked on some support & troubleshooting tasks that i picked up late on Friday. My monthly report is not yet done, other work yams are not done. I interspersed it with some cooking, preparing mushrooms and then wild rice for a casserole.
After dark we were back downtown, finding what books were accepted and taking most of the remainder to the library for their book sales. Some chunk of the books will likely end up being recycled somewhere some day soon, but it's hard to do that on ones own. We also looked in to the small grocery that's under new management to pick up the milk Christine needed.
Today promises to be somewhat full, with coffee with friends and Christine. I'll go to Meeting and Christine will go to a golf lesson. I've Meeting for Business to attend for the first time in months, and then we'll do our weekly grocery shopping (or at least plan meals and make the list for later). I think i'd rather get a walk in.
I did have an asthmatic cough spasm yesterday evening, and find i am still clearing my lungs of the remnants of The Cold. Still, i feel ever so much better. The giddiness is gone, as after the awareness of restored competence and capacity came awareness of the issues that wait my attention. I am now aware of this potential trigger for a depressive spiral and it is something that i can control. New habits to be negotiated!
I hope your weekend is going well!

"Social science now finds itself in almost total darkness about the qualities that make life most worth living," said Martin Seligman, a University of Pennsylvania psychologist and past president of the American Psychological Association, in a 1998 speech.
... But 21st-century psychology, he predicted, "will become a science of human strength and of personal fulfillment."
