Left home at 18:17 and headed to Sanford through Pittsboro, forgetting that through traffic is blocked by road construction at the courthouse. I don't think it did anything but put me behind a few minutes. I set the trip odometer a few miles from home, too. Google maps, with coaxing, says four miles. Crepe myrtles by the road were stunning. GMaps routed me off I-95 due to an accident near the NC-SC border causing hour-long backups, but it was often four lanes and divided with rare traffic. Sandhills landscape twinged all sorts of growing-up memories, pin oaks and scrub oaks. Not south enough for Spanish moss yet. Loved the colors of summer in the late evening light with the glow from cloud tops.

Oooooooh.

I started out thinking about how convenient it is to have high-level and advance information on What On Earth Why Is Traffic Blocked? When I was a child, I lived in a place nearly devoid of traffic blockage, but I can remember our family encountering it once in a while on road trips, the whistling crackly switching across radio stations to try to get news of How Long Now (Maybe).

But then your evocation of the countryside overwhelmed me. I love alternate routes and back ways. Yesterday as I ferried Chun Woo from skating to SAT prep I made a too-early right turn and we were on a road I haven't been on in ten years or so, though it's near home. Horse properties offering riding lessons and boarding, and the road winding around Clear Creek's path.

I should acknowledge that I also find warehouse districts-- both active and decaying-- fascinating. :D

I love crepe myrtles in July.
