Today an entry in a sorta poem-like shape, counting deaths.

Midsummer death

and a resurrection:
a theme set by bluebirds.

I live with carnivores
who instinctively hunt prey.
My culture depends on
machines
that bring creative ways to die.

Bluebirds swoop and dive at cat and dog
and me.
Their jaw-snap defiance fails,
and a fledgling is crunched
and swallowed.

News reports of men
in a machine
in the deep ocean
out of contact.
I assume the jaws of the deep
crunched and swallowed.

On a walk,
a box turtle
carcass.
Crunched by
rolling machines.

A mouse in the house.
Then no mouse.
Was there a crunch and swallow?

This morning
a cat growls
defending its prey
from another cat.

A young rabbit,
momentarily laid on the floor.
A twitch, and
i swallow it up with a towel.
I nest the towel
outside,
out of cat reach,
and observe movement of the head
stillness of the back.

I return inside to think.
To imagine.
Is the neck broken?
Can i...
crunch...
life
if there is no hope?

A little later
no rabbit in the towel.
A happy ending,
i imagine.

I really like your poem (poemlet!). So much death in our world. Summer is the worst really. All the babies that have to die to keep the rest going. I'm glad you could save one little rabbit anyway. It can live to enjoy another day...

This is moving. I appreciate the hope at the end.
