This is so rich and amazing. I didn't know that about buckeyes!

A few years ago I visited a native plant garden in Massachusetts which was lovely, but it featured a display of "invasive non-native plants" locked up behind bars in a miniature replica of an old-time jailhouse -- all folksy and Americana and xenophobic. I have also seen some [white] environmentalists use this "natives are better for the environment" argument to argue against human immigration. I am interested in how we project these allegiances and prejudices onto the natural world, whether or not they match up to the actual biological processes you describe.

I totally agree with you about the aesthetics of diversity and abundance and also the richness of information in an ecosystem. Thanks so much for this great answer. I love when you write about your plant projects!
