We have a native maple that has red flowers (tiny little poofs - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maple#/media/File:Maple7951.JPG ) in the spring. There's one at the back of the orchard that seemed to have nice color, but the two i saved inside the orchard fence hoping for color didn't have any this year. Perhaps a selected variety and not the wild trees might have more color even in the shade. Japanese maples need sun to have good color.

There aren't native maples where you are? I realize i don't know exactly where you live, i imagine at the latitude of Sheffield or Leeds?
