I have some massive sweet gums, too, one 100ft tall per a drone's elevation measurement. But what i really hate is that they sprout everywhere, thickets of them, and they sprout off the roots of the elder trees -- lines of trees out from the larger ones. And deer aren't that interested in them (although apparently elsewhere sweet gums are apparently prime white tail forage). And none of ours have the spectacular color selected varieties do. Abundance breeds a certain disdain.

I don't know how common the variant usage is: it might just be my father's misunderstanding passed on. Or maybe just a small corner of Georgia.
