Which statement is disparaging of religion?
A) "when you put on your Jesus glasses, you can't see the truth."
or
B) referring to creationism as "religious, superstitious nonsense."
A California court found A not disparaging, B disparaging. I really really really think an educator ought to be able to say B and not say A.
Statement A is disrespectful and disregards the complexity of vision that people have in the name of Jesus of Nazareth. Crusades and discrimination must be balanced against the abolition of legal slavery, women's right to vote, much effort for labor reform. A history teacher ought to know better.
But protecting Creationism??
I hope the teacher appeals and this is overturn. I doubt the "kid" would follow up with an appeal about the 19 charges that were dropped.
