I am astounded at the lack of imagination folks have. By folks, i mean "politicians." The Gubernator is withdrawing his support for expanded drilling off the coast of California because of the Gulf oil spill. He couldn't imagine that happening until now? What was the Valdez spill in Alaska?
UPDATE: Oh, i see: the the Valdez was due to a drunken captain. The imagination gap was in not imagining how a human or technical failure would affect an oil drilling platform.
Once upon a time i learned a great deal about building nuclear power plants. Every system had to survive two mechanical failures PLUS one stupid human trick. As soon as single technical failure was discovered at one plant, every plant had to do an analysis of what might be a similar failure in that plant and what redundancy measures were in place. I wonder if oil platforms are as tightly regulated? (Hahahahaha.)
