I called the ranger station yesterday and found that, while there are no bear boxes at the campgrounds i'm thinking about, we don't need them there. So, yay, there goes some expenses. The water purifier will be a sensible (and small) addition to our kit.
We might want to get snow cables, but that decision can probably be postponed to the day before the trip. Who knows whether there will be snow near the Sierra crest by then. I'll check this webcam to find out.
I'm still looking at packing food in Bear Country, even though it's not necessary for this trip. The author of this page has rather forceful ideas as a last word in the "backcountry food suggestions." I concur.
This video shows the area we'll be camping in: the put in place for these white water trips. It's late in a dry season: we won't be seeing much water in the river unless a warm wet storm comes through, i suppose.
