I embarrassingly mistook ground squirrels for pika some years ago, i so want to see them. This post just led me to a stronger wish to observe them (especially as i contemplate moving east).
I looked at it again. No rat tail, and no bushy squirrel tail either. IIRC, my sister's pet rat used to make caches of food in its cage as well. And squirrels bury nuts. We tend to think of rats as vermin and not credit them with that "busy ant, hard worker" behavior. What if there's some hardwired mammal hoarder instinct? What if there's a hoarding gene?

*sorry to overthink rodents in your journal*
