Maybe i should celebrate friends and family around 1 August. The light is changing then, but it's still longer day than night. The weather can be humid and hot so an excuse to be inside is fine. I might have gardening to do then -- it's certainly when i should be getting winter greens in, but this year i didn't coax the seedlings out that well. (Probably should have watered more.)

This, because current practices of celebrating at the winter solstice aren't working for me.

This has probably already occurred to you, but I think that's a large part of why winter solstice celebrations were held: because that was the time of the year when everyone was miserable and ready for change.
