I grew up hating mushroom soup, or at least the version that came in cans with the red and white label. A decade or so ago, I met a friend for lunch at a restaurant that had a good reputation. Their appetizer special was cream of mushroom soup, and on a whim I ordered it because even if I disliked it, there would be an entree to follow.

I don't know if that was the best soup I ever had in my life, but it certainly made the top five. I would have licked the bowl clean if I hadn't been in public.
