I am currently tasked with clearing the less-encumbered dining room table to move it, but that entails also clearing the more-encumbered dining room table so that it can receive fruit bowls and be available. It is an awesome and terrible task, in toto.
That conversation with J sounds like a few conversations I've had with long-unencountered friends. I don't *think* I've ever striven mightily to impress any of them, but when they came in with an air of being the sophisticate I figured they were. Now, reading what you wrote and having noticed a lot more about US cultural regularities, I wonder whether they were doing hierarchical armwrestling and interpreting interaction in that light. In which case I might well seem like a strange opponent, in general flopped over on my back but periodically speaking out of some specific expertise....
I wish COVID news coverage were still as prominent as a year ago. From what I do see I get the sense of reservoirs of variant infection building and likely to boil over, while lots of people are dancing about talking about the pandemic being over.
