I’m lucky in having started paying attention to birds and plants as a kid in Southern Illinois, so on trips from there. Because of that, when I moved within North America, I learned new species and demographics, but was still fundamentally familiar with the populations.
With plants, that’s my situation still. Not with birds. Nor with reptiles and amphibians, but they lead more subtle lives and aren’t up in my face flummoxing me. :D
