Addendum N°10 2024 perpetual calendar

Yesterday was bright and clear - -unlike much of the week -- and we hit 26.2 kWh, the highest since Sept 16. The top of the tall (60'? More?) cherry tree next to the house is budding out. I hope that the tree clearing we did will make a difference this year: right now, still no leaves to compete.

Also, the juneberry by the driveway had fat flowerbuds yesterday.

I was proactive and planted three sourwood, two ninebark, and a juneberry/serviceberry/shadblow (I love all the names for that plant). What is most likely to come up are sweetgum and invasive autumn olive, holly and spicebush, all of which the deer don't eat. I often see young cherries and redbuds, but they never seem to stay around: i assume in particular the deer eat the redbuds since inside the orchard and my garden fence the redbuds keep growing. (And then i transplant them and then they disappear.)

I imagine clearing out autumn olive somewhere in the woods and marking two plots, one open, one where i discourage deer, and seeing how differently they develop.

Actually, i do find that deer do nibble the tender tops of young autumn olives in the winter, pruning them for bushiness.

I specially love the name shad blow: I am very fond of shad roe, and also shad, for that matter.
