The day after my reposting of Quaker House's post, which referenced an "imaginary insurrection," i read Electoral Vote's review (with historical and legal context on presidential rights). The section headed "...And in Court" notes the call up of the Marines was not under the insurrection act. A muted "yay" at that.

At the end of the month, my third nephew D-- is headed to "New Student Indoctrination" for his Navy ROTC scholarship to Fancy Pants Connecticut College. I believe it was a struggle to choose between that and the US Naval Academy in Annapolis. I know the current administration was on my brother's mind the whole time, even if it is D--'s decision. D-- spent one week last summer at the Academy's Summer Seminar and in the spring attended a "Candidate Visit Weekend."
When i think of the political context of those visits vs this summer... it's been a very long five months. I will get to chat with my brother on Sunday morning and will find out how the pictures of the Marines bivouacing in LA hit him.

Christine is going to her sister's regularly now to support her in their vigil with B--. B-- is mostly sleeping now. The emotional struggle is around the device he has that pumps for his heart. He's at home: intensive care hospices have no beds and it's unclear now whether he could be moved to one. So to have the pump turned off will take an uncertain amount of time after the decision for someone to arrive to do so. The challenge, then, is if he is in distress and the pump is prolonging it, accepting the uncertain duration for the arrival of someone compared to an ICU Hospice where the assistance would be fairly prompt. Or do you withdraw the pump before physical distress?
I know my mind, and like i am currently pondering "What level of physical degradation in myself means we move so there's no yard to care for?" i suspect i would have pondered what such a device would mean at end of life and discussed this with Christine. I think of the discussions we had over a year before we moved to NC about moving: we had several triggers decided upon. When one happened on Mar 2 2016, we got buy-in for a move from my employer, packed, found a house, bought it, and moved across country in less than three months. Dying isn't moving though, but it gives me ideas about how i want to address withdrawing life support in the ... OK, making the decisions is one thing but getting paperwork filled out and organized in a timely manner is completely different.
I should get a temporary will and whatsitcalled done.
