So Facebook gets all the press about exposing news about you, but LinkedIn seems just as problematic. They have "Network Updates" that announce when you change things in your profile, connect to folks, leave recommendations, etc. There is this page that explains how you can keep your activity quiet.

Why might you want to do this? Well, this morning i find that a staff member has updated his expertise. Is he actively looking? I know how much he is frustrated. I'd rather not spend some months tweaking my profile and have it visible to all. What i want to do is stealthily spend time on my profile (and do some recommendations and possibly go on a connection spree) and then turn back on network announcements and (ugh) network.

I have mixed evidence that turning off the updates works. It's been off for a while -- since Tuesday last week? And a friend thinks she saw an update i made after turning it off. So. i'll twiddle again when Christine gets her settings. I connected to a new person yesterday, so that might show in the network activity.

Profile and Status Updates
When you update your status, make significant changes to your profile, recommend people and services, or follow companies, LinkedIn can automatically notify your connections and show the update on your company's profile.
