Christine and i attended the opening concert of the Cabrillo Music festival last night, which features contemporary classical music.
I do have some complaints about my seat in the Santa Cruz Civic Auditorium, built by the PWA in the thirties with seats designed for starved Californians and a cushion that hasn't been replaced since, but no one had the top button of their shirt buttoned. This is Santa Cruz! (There may have been one neck-tie.)
I was delighted by the concert, and have the four streaming broadcasts to come amrked on my calendar: http://kusp.org/art/cabrillo-festival.html
Shame, shame, shame on Christine and i, but Lisa Pegher looks like she's 19! I was fascinated by the percussion section at the concert Christine and i attended last night, and Lisa stood out from the three local percussionists:
Galen Lemmon, San Jose CA Principal
Jim Kassis, Oakland CA
Lisa Pegher, Pittsburgh PA
Ward Spangler, Oakland CA
We airily commented to each other some "interning" and "privilege for her" to be present.
Oh, look, she's a solo recorded artist, principal timpanist at several symphonies, etc, etc. http://lisapegher.blogspot.com/ I think i have to buy her album in penance. And now i ponder that i have no way of knowing which of the three male California percussionists was which. One in particular was so active, moving between percussive instruments and , and seeming like a full foley section. Would that be the principal, Galen Lemmon?
I'm also buying a Lou Harrison album. He was mentioned in the program notes of a new music for medieval instruments concert i attended a month or so ago, and it seems his presence in Aptos, CA helped seed the Cabrillo Festival. The other thing i need to do is rip some of our John Adams collection.
Good evening. Welcome to Difficult Listening Hour. The spot on your dial for that relentless and impenetrable sound of Difficult Music (Music). So sit bolt upright in that straight-backed chair (Music), button that top button (Music), and get set for some difficult music.
