Describe a time when you feel the team/group performed real well. What were the circumstances during the time? -- p34
OK, i think of Summer 2008 as we were pushing to a crunch time -- Someone Else's Fault that we had not been able to start coding the UI until the last minute and three of us worked like mad. But that's not the type well i want us to work under -- weekends and nights. We're slowly improving as a team now, but the constant pulling off of folks to do urgent work on another project breaks the team as a team. I need to talk to my boss about that. I've been working with this other project eating at my attempt to build a team since July of 2009. Individuals are performing great.
When i was ops manager we were an improving team, but it was understaffed and under critical pressure. I think we did pull together. We had clear priorities, i think that helps...
The database migration was another performing nobly despite the circumstances -- and i think this is part of my problem with the question -- i can think of cases where i am really very proud to work with these folks but where there was so much dysfunction and other problems that i don't think it was great performance. I'm proud to have worked with folks because despite too few resources or poor management we all pulled off successes -- that were successful enough that we could keep going.
But i don't have much that i can look back on and say, that was done beautifully!
The next question asks Describe a time when you were proud to be a member of the team/group. Why were your proud? I answered some of that above, but to continue *why* i was proud os because i think everyone behaved responsibly and well. As a manager i didn't have to negotiate with staff to get the job done, even though the situation wasn't helping them get their job done. There may be little grumbles, but no one i'm working with is toxic. While the greater organization had some respect problems, i've been fortunate to work in environments of respect, mostly. So i'm proud because we're all working to do a good job.
I'll admit that there have been some folks who have not had the abilities to do the needed job. I think i've managed to respect them as persons and simultaneously be able to help them understand the gap between the job's need and their ability.
What do you value most about being a member of this team/group? Why? The respectful way folks work together. There may be dysfunction and eye-rolling, but that's often as we work with others outside the group. Even then, there's respectful treatment.
Not the most explicit of answers: as a side note, my mind flashed between Whale and Minnow situations. There was a great deal of toxicity going on at the Minnow and i am thankful that some of us are here at the Whale. The Whale has some different problems, and there's some really bad spots: i'm just fortunate that i'm currently in a very good place.
