Locally, infections are coming down, so it's time to reopen. Never mind that on the one hand, they are still higher than they were at any previous peak - the current peak having been so much higher than previous ones. And on the other hand, with do-it-yourself covid testing available, it's likely that even fewer infections are being reported - if the person doesn't come in contact with the medical system, they aren't counted.
The short termism is appalling.
Very few people - and even fewer news writers - seem to look at the long term picture, as in the NYT graphic above.
And that, boys and girls, is why my household is still ordering groceries for delivery, in spite of the optimistic news stories locally, and the governor's removal of the state-wide indoor mask mandate. (Blessedly, our county health officer promptly imposed a county-wide one, but Santa Clara is the only one of the 7 once-united bay area counties to do so.)
